Winter is seen by many as the off-season in Srinagar. But this is a mistake. In winter, the unique geography of Srinigar presents a different, but just as beautiful face and personnae. Look at this photograph of the frozen Dal Lake and imagine yourself enjoying the heated rooms of your houseboat while only a short distance from the many historical and cultural sites, arts and crafts, and shopping and golfing fun, that Srinagar continues to offer.
And now, in winter, we can add the fun and exhilaration of skiing in the fresh snow of Gulmarg!!
Gulmarg is only 56 kilometres away. At 2,730 metres, it is a skiing paradise for:
* beginning skiiers * intermediate skiers *experts and champions.
The skiing season usually commences just before Xmas [mid-December] and continues until early April. Gulmarg has the benefits of modern equipment such as snow beating machines and snow mobiles. It boasts a French-made Gondola cable car for intermediate, expert skiers and sightseers. Good quality equipment, including skis, boots, sticks, gloves and goggles, are all available on hire from the Government-run ski shop. Trained instructors are on hand for skiers at all skill levels.
Beginners and intermediate skiers: Gulmarg has the best facilities for beginning and intermediate skiers. Hiring and lift costs are kept low, and the all-important length of queues is small, which means less time waiting around, and much more time for fun and laughter! All runs are serviced by ski lifts and chair lifts. Ski runs range from 200 to 900 metres.
Good and expert skiers: With the setting up of the Gondola Cable Car, Gulmarg has become the highest lift-served ski resort in the world. It provides a downhill ski run of 5.2 kms from a height of 14,000 feet. It is also the longest gondola-served ski lift in Asia. For those experts with a passion for fresh snow and a long and challenging run, heli-skiing is all the “go”. Heli-skiing was introduced to Gulmarg in the 1980s
Non-skiers will love the snow fun too: Gulmarg offers other means of having wonderful fun and games. Non-skiers, toddlers and just “lazy-bones” can enjoy the fun and laughter that goes with sledging, tobogganing, ice-skating, snow-boarding, pony-rides and gondola sightseeing.
